Karel Appel is one of the leading members of the Cobra group (1948-1951) where writers, poets and artists united to work together from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. In all this the collective aspect was most dominant. CoBrA showed a new mentality, a new approach and new depictions.This early work is typical of his colourful idiom and highlights the intuitive, spontaneous and child-like qualities of his work.
In a colourful way, Appel shows us the farmer, a sheep, a sea-virgin and other animals in front of their house. The subject is “the desire to entireness of the creation and the integration of the human into nature”. The work is made for the biggest international Cobra-exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum. Cobra was with this exhibition at his height of his short existence. The enorm painting measures 350 x 360 cm.

Nederlandse schilder, is een van de bekendste voormannen van de CoBrA-groep (1948 – 1951) waarin schrijvers, dichters en beeldende kunstenaars zich verenigden om vanuit Kopenhagen, Brussel en Amsterdam samen te werken. Het collectieve aspect overheerste hierbij. CoBrA toonde een nieuwe mentaliteit, een nieuwe werkwijze en nieuwe voorstellingen.
Het werk “Mens en Dieren”toont het typische, kleurrijke idioom van Appel, waarbij intuïtie en spontaniteit een grote rol spelen. De boer, de schaap, de uil, de vogel en de zeemeermin zijn door Appel kleurrijk verbeeld. Het thema is “het verlangen naar de heelheid van de schepping en de integratie van de mens in de natuur”. Het werk is tot stand gekomen voor de in 1949 grootste internationale Cobra-tentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum. Deze tentoonstelling was daarmee het hoogtepunt van het kortstondige bestaan van de Cobra. Het enorme schilderij meet 350 x 360 cm.9
