Cezanne inspired Braque with this work to make “Houses in ‘l Estaque”(see work 16), herewith is his contributions to birth of Cubism explained. Chateau Noir, a strange red-coloured building with Gotiek windows, is painted by Cezanne for at least hundred times, the same counts for the mountain Sainte-Victoire. In this unique work both objects are presented. The castle is eliminated into a few red blocks surrounded by mysterious trees. The mysterious trees referes to the local legend about the gost of the alchimist who lives on in the castle. Cezanne rented a room in the west part of the building to work and to store his painting equipment. After the dead of his mom he tried to buy the castle, he didn’t succeed. In the castle he burnt many works about which he was not satisfied.
Cezanne didn’t try to copy an object, a mountain, a castle, an apple, etc, on his painting, but rather to analyze the solidity and essential geometry inherent in each form. the dark spots in the work are the mysterious trees which Cezanne painted almost completely black. He reduces the scene to its most basic elements, stripping away descriptive detail.

Cezanne heeft met dit werk, Braque geïnspireerd om het werk “Huizen in ‘l Estaque”(zie werk 16) te maken, hiermee is de bijdrage van Cezanne aan het Cubisme verklaard. Chateau Noir, een vreemd roodachtig gebouw met Gotische ramen, is door Cezanne honderden keren net als de berg Sainte-Victoire geschilderd. In dit unieke werk zijn beide objecten terug te vinden. Het kasteel is teruggebracht tot een paar rode blokken, omringd door rechthoekige duistere bomen. De duistere bomen refereren naar de plaatselijke legende over de geest van de alchimist die in het kasteel rondzweefd. Enkele jaren achtereen huurde Cezanne er een kamer in de west vleugel om te werken en zijn schilderuitrusting te bewaren. Later probeerde hij het pand ook te kopen. In het kasteel verbrandde hij ook veel eigen werken, omdat hij ontevreden was over het resultaat.
Cezanne streefde er niet naar om een object, een berg, een kasteel, een appel, etc, op zijn doek te kopieëren, hij streefde er naar om het object te ontleden op basis van geometrie. De donkere vlekken in het werk zijn de duisteren bomen die door Cezanne bijna volledig zwart zijn afgebeeld.
