Hendrik Chabot

Hendrik Chabot is one of the most significant Rotterdam artists from the decades surrounding World War II. Chabot owes his fame, to the penetrating way in which he protrayed war themes. The painting I cut shows a village with a whirling and sweltering air full of dramatic red clouds. The work refers to the enormous bombing of May 14, 1940.
After the bombing big parts of Rotterdam were flat as a coin. The bombing destroyed major parts of Rotterdam and the atelier of the artist. During the war he could hardly survive as a free painter due to the fact that he didn’t signed for the Nederlandse Kulturkamer (the Dutch departement of art and propaganda which was established by the Nazi-regime after the February-strike in 1941)
Actually, I like this work because it is split into two parts. Above the horizon you can see the cloud of smoke as consequence of the bombing, below the horizon you see a peacefull village with farmerhouses around a corn-field near Rotterdam.

Chabot Museum, Rotterdam, 194Hendrik Chabot is een van de belangrijkste Rotterdamse kunstenaar geweest van de jaren rond de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Chabot dankt zijn faam aan de indringende wijze waarop hij oorlogthema’s in beeld heeft gebracht. Het door mij uitgesneden schilderij laat een dorp zien met daarboven een kolkende en broeierige lucht vol met dramatische rode wolkenpartijen.
Het werk verwijst hiermee naar de bombardementen van 14 mei 1940, die Rotterdam en zijn atelier vernietigde. Tijdens de oorlog kon hij als vrije schilder nauwelijk overleven omdat hij niet tekende voor de Nederlandse Kulturkamer (het Nederlandse ministerie van kunst en propaganda dat door het Nazi-regime was opgericht na de Februari staking in 1941).
Ik vind dit werk interessant omdat het werk in feite in twee delen is opgesplitst. Boven de horizon zien we de gevolgen van het bombardement “rookwolken”, onder de horizon zien we een vredig dorp rond Rotterdam met boerenhuizen rond een graanweide.0
