Bernard Buffet was a French painter whose figurative paintings and prints express a sense of anxiety associated with the philosophical movement known as Existentialism. His commitment to realistic, rather than abstract, art was demonstrated by his joining the group Homme-Témoin in 1949. Buffet’s career culminated in 1973 with the opening of a museum devoted to his work near Mishima, Japan.
Throughout his career Buffet favoured tragic subjects, often taken from the story of the Passion, which he depicted with angular figures and mostly sombre colours, as in ‘Woman with Bath’ in which he used for 85% grey and in which the woman is angular shaped instead of round. This is the reason that I used a new line, the horizontal line for grey. The ‘Van Loon Lino-Colourcircle’ is extensive with grey and brown. Brown is the combination of horizontal and vertical lines. The floor, the wall and the windows are grey, only the desk, the plint and the woman are brown.

Bernard Buffet was een Franse schilder wiens figuratieve schilderijen en prints een gevoel van angst toont dit hoort bij de filosofische beweging het Existentialisme. Het verbond met het realisme, anders dan abstract, kunst werd door hem vertoond nadat hij zich aansloot bij Homme-Témoin in 1949. Buffet’s carriere ontwikkelde zich pijlsnel in 1973 na de opening van een museum volledig aan hem gewijd vlakbij Mishima in Japan.
Gedurende zijn carriere waren tragische onderwerpen zijn favoriet, meestal vanuit het oogpunt van de liefde, welke hij afbeelde met hoekige figuren en meestal sombere kleuren, net als in ‘Vrouw met badkuip’ waarin hij voor 85% grijs gebruikte en waarin hij de vrouw hoekig in plaats van rond afbeelde. Dit is de reden dat ik een nieuwe lijn gebruikte, de horizontale lijn voor grijs. De ‘Van Loon Lino-Kleurencirkel’ is uitgebried met grijs en bruin. Bruin is de combinatie van horizontale en verticale lijnen. De vloer, the muur en de ramen zijn grijs, alleen de tafel, de plint en de vrouw zijn bruin.
